Touching up an old photo on iPad or Android tablet

This tutorial was based around Snapseed on iPad and android for editing photos on a tablet or phablet/phone.

You can download Snapseed for free from the Google Playstore or Apple Appstore.

Snapped is a tablet/iPad only App

Click the link to download the pictures used in the tutorial or tap the picture

Once you have the old photos on your screen from the link

  • Tap the Scratched photo to preview it on your device.
  • Select the three dots in the right hand side for the options menu

  • Select download for the image to be downloaded and added to your camera roll

Editing the picture

  • Open snapseed
  • The minimal screen has a big + symbol, simply tap the screen to load an image
  • Select open from device
  • look for camera roll
  • look for the downloaded image and tap it to open

From the effects thumbnails I tap fine art to turn the image into black and white. You can choose another but this works fine for me. Try different ones to suit. When happy Tap the Tick symbol to accept.

Now we will attend to the creases. Find the pencil icon to open the editor options and look for the healing icon (crossed plasters)

Using the two finger pinch to zoom into the image to make the repair process easier.

Now paint over the crease so that it turns red keeping your finger on the screen. When you release Snapseed will do its stuff. You may need to do this a number of times until you are happy. If you make a mistake there's a handy undo icon to press. The size of the brush does not change but zooming in and out determines how much is healed at a time.
To move to another area use the two finger pinch or two finger swipe across the screen.

When you are finished removing creases then tap the tick icon to accept the changes.

Within a few minutes you could remove all the creases.
I like to reapply a vintage filter to the retouched image to emphasise it is an old image. Tap the pencil for the editing tools and tap the vintage icon ( Old lamp)
When the thumbnails appear pick one that suits your taste. If the effect is not quite right then you can select brightness, saturation, style or vignette using an up/down swipe and adjust strength of each by a left/right swipe. Tap the tick to accept.

When you are happy with the masterpiece then you can use the save option to save an editable version of the photo or export a new image.

I will return to this image soon with a Photoshop/Affinity Photo tutorial for PC/MAC/iPAD pro
